The Future of the Hardwood Lumber Industry

Mark Barford

Mark Barford is a former Hardwood Lumber Association CEO with 35 years of leadership for non-profit wood based associations. He has done extensive public speaking and travel to raise the visibility and stature of the hardwood industry organizations. He has travelled extensively overseas travel including Asia, Europe and the middle east.

Before Mark began working with the National Wooden Pallet and Container Association (NWPCA) as Senior Director Business Partnerships this summer, he retired as the Executive Director/CEO of the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA), Memphis, TN. NHLA is 800-member national trade association with a $3.5 million budget and 22 employees. During his time they reinvented the association to become International in scope with a significant change in brand and replacing the logo used for over 100 years.

Mark also served as President/CEO of the Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers, Inc., High Point, NC, Director of Forest Resources and Membership for the Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association, Forest Park, GA and began his career working as the Director of Member Services/Exposition Manager for the Virginia Forest Products Association, Sandston, VA. He began his career as a forester and has a BS Forestry, from the College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Syracuse, NY (1975). He now lives in Charleston, SC with his wife of 40 years Michelle and their son Nick and daughter Caitlin.
